What Does DSL Mean

The world of internet is very complex with so many new terms and technologies coming each and every day. DSL is a digital Subscriber Line that provides internet connectivity via digital data transmission through the cables or wires usually through a local telephone network. It uses the same current telephone line to send and receive packets of data. You can talk over the phone and use the internet simultaneously. Gone are the days when you connect to the internet by putting your phone line on busy.
Depending upon the level of technology, service level situation, and condition of the line, the bit rate of consumer line can vary from 256 kbit/s to 40 Mbit/s.

Types of DSL Technology

There are two types of DSL technology.

Asymmetric DSL

This type of DSL provides more downloading bandwidth than uploading and is mostly used in the home. Home users mostly use the internet for downloading purposes. Asymmetric DSL usually provides 5 Mbps for downloading and 1 Mbps for uploading. Asymmetric DSL is further categorized into ADSL, RADSL, and VDSL.

Symmetric DSL

Symmetric DSL keeps equality in downloading and uploading bandwidth. As the business has a high need for data transfer, this DSL is best suited for business class. Normally, symmetric DSL connections support 1.5 Mbps for both downloading and uploading purposes. Like Asymmetric DSL, Symmetric is categorized into SDSL, HDSL, and SHDSL.

IDSL

This type of technology has outdated because of the low speed it gives. IDSL is based on hybrid ISDN technology.

DSL or Cable which is better?

The cable is usually treated as fast speed medium. However, there is no empirical evidence of this. In practical life, DSL provides better speed than cable. When it comes to security, DSL has an upper edge over cable services. But for home users, both provide sufficient security.

DSL Internet Service Is Free?

Gone are the days when companies like HyperSpy and Freedsl.com was offering free DSL services to home users. This promotional activity has ended up along with the winding of these companies. However, there are many companies offering free first month DSL internet services as a trial to test and then continue the service upon paying monthly payments.

How Fast My DSL is?

This is mostly asked a question. The answer is simple and easy. Your DSL service provider gives DSL speed in terms of bandwidth. Home users usually offered 128 Kbps to 3 Mbps DSL speed. However, you should check the speed yourself by visiting various speed test websites. Search for these types of websites in your popular search engines. This website will show you upload and download speed, which will clear all the wrong claims made by the service provider. I was paying a handsome amount for 2 Mbps DSL, and when I checked it so many times, the download and upload speed was below than claimed. Often DSL speed is advertised like 1.5 Mbps / 128 Kbps. The first one shows the maximum bandwidth for downloading and the other one shows the maximum bandwidth for uploading. Your speed should come at least 70% of advertised figures using speed test websites.
